In War

With deafening Drums Thundering into the night
Like Wild Stallions the Wind rides this barren land
Under skies so broody without stars nor moon in sight
Boiling red rivers run vast across the stained sand

A Sense of Chill suddenly fills the air
As Birds of Steel circle high above thee
With Horror in their eyes they flock in pairs
Ready to swoop and rip apart all they see

The grounds shake as if an earthquake approaches
As a shadow so dark moves across the ground
With screeches and wails so loud our ears ache
Unknowing more rapid our hearts seem to pound

A moment the world in stillness we hold
The sky starts to clear and on the morrow
Upon our eyes mountains of flesh do unfold
The falling rain reddened with anger and warmed in sorrow.

Our hearts grieved the fallen and our minds forever scarred
With the imminent memories of horror pain and fear
All our beloved brothers dead and drowned in red
Forever in our hearts for them we shed a melancholic tear

He sipped whiskey on this sober night
Trying to find a guiding light
While the air stank of decaying stenches
He found his soul in these lonely trenches

This was the final push they told him
With the other lies and should have been's
Borthers fought and comrades danced
And now they lie dead on no man's land

But through the silence he heard a voice
A song that came from a sweet young boy
The tune was familiar yet the words were not
But he knew the meaning of the song

Around him voices began to rise
A holy choir in the night
That's german he finally realized
The german's version of Silent Night

The song ended and a cheer was heard
And men climbed over the parapet
They stood up tall and unafraid
For tonight no shells will be laid

It's moment's peace and a fleeting truce
For the next day the war continues
But for tonight let us feast
And forget that we were enemies

You might not believe this story
Of how friends were forged when they were enemies
But truth it was and truth it still is
The christmas truce of 1914
